Reference

Part of a a real object, an existing concept or an idea, this tool can be used correctly or incorrectly; That will depend on the user. Although artists used it to give form to their creations through models, that doesn't take away the fact they used references.

Hatch Pattern with Pencil
Technique: Hatch pattern through pencil (Talk about that later)

A reference may be a tridimensional object, a person, photo, cartoon, etc. Essentially, everything that surrounds us. Though we could say that our brain holds a registry of everything we see, when we train more we'll notice that the brain takes lots of references and adapts it to what we're looking for.

About reference, the objective is to facilitate the exposure to ideas through the use and combination of already existing variables so that a new concept will emerge and show our own invention through expression techniques: Painting, drawing, sculpting, music, etc. For that, references only reinforce the base and the rest will depend on how we evolve our concepts.

The use of references holds no limit, and one can cover a wide field. For Character Creation in manga, it is vital because it will facilitate an endless number of features.

Now, bad use of it also happens. Under NO circumstance you should copy a character. This only worsens when what could have been seen as awesome of a character is not necessarily what the creator must have done. To create something it is necessary to apply the path known as creative concept, which is something most people don't like, as it is like studying.

But I'm digressing. The reference is not a tool to abuse. Always keep that in mind and you shall not fail.

If right now references are clear to you, you will be able to use them and you won't regret about that. Train your mind to create quick concepts and study, read, listen to music, watch movies (But good movies); Search for it's "plot" and you'll see what you can do and what you should not do.

To give you some extra tips, here I'll leave you some tool so you can use them with the references and to know what to look for:
  • Photography
  • Sketches (Yours or someone else's)
  • Friends (Ask them to pose, if possible)
  • Printed articles (Magazines, Newspapers, Mangas, etc.)
  • TV
  • Nature
  • The Internet

And whatever else you can think of.
All of these count as tools for investigation and you can use them to create something incredible.
Lastly, I'll leave you this. Use them wisely. They are the 16 Personality Factors of a Character
Useful for creating complex characters, and those who will look alive

This is the example of how to use a friend as a reference. I made her anime style

My friend shall remain anonymous
(Though...I put her name on the drawing....)
