Pokemon Critique

"I wanna be the very best,

Like no one ever was.

To catch them is my real test ,

To train them is my cause."

Not sure..if a Voltorb or a pokeball...

Pokemon ((ポケモン Pokemon)  is a media franchise  published by Japanese video game  company Nintendo , owned by The Pokemon Company and created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996.

Pokemon (with the original chuby pikachu and all )

The plot of the Anime series  focus on the adventures of Ash Ketchum  , a 10 year old  kid that strives to become the best Pokemon trainer.

Once again it's time for another of my critiques , I gotta say despise the small plot the series is so extend and complete that I  pretty much didn't need to go beyond the Opening to make my point (tho before you say anything...I have seen this series since season 1 and...I kinda still watch it even now soo..)
So I hope you enjoy my critique and remember that this is but my humbly  personal opinion and it's completely OK if you disagree with me.

Kay so...yeah..shortest plot ever....but to be  honest it's really clever and for the time,   one of the most innovative plots I ever saw.
A world where  creatures with amazing abilities and powers exist , some use them as pets , others live with them as friends and companions and others even use them as tools for war.
Using a capsule like system (which PETA  hate a lot by the way....)  with the most advanced   technology this creatures are stored , contained and healed ( would love to be able to have something like pokeballs for other things  ,  just imagine being capable of store object the size of a whale on something you can carry on your pocket~ )
That would have been an amazing way to clean my room...

The simplicity of the plot is what I believe make it so amazing  , nothing of the time can compare to it and the most similar Anime I ever got to  watch "Monster Rancher"   can't really compare to the originality of Pokemon plot.
A shame  Ash  almost never wins a Pokemon League

Pokemon is interesting in it's developing since every now and then Ash ends up with new companions (and sometimes he and Pikachu forget the basic stuff like battles and Pokemon catching despise they have done  it for like... more than a decade...)  and Ash doesn't change much , rather the development is shown on the world itself , to give an example if we compare season 1 and 2 of Pokemon with the most resent one X & Y you can notice that many   things are change like for example Pokemon not being ate by humans which happens in the video game and is mention on season 1  , violence and topics like death being avoided. Another interesting detail is elements like poisoning not being lethal when in season 1 a whole episode was dedicated at the real risk a Pokemon battle  involves.

To think this guys were really bad ass at one point..
The reason for that is that , for better or for worse at the time the Series was being broadcast the audience was primarily conformed by children  , which in time evolved to the series we know today.

Though  the original and more mature theme intended by the creators of Pokemon  can be seen in the manga "Pokemon Adventures" and most recently in the OVA  based on the first games Red and Blue (where you can really feel the true intentions for the Pokemon world the creators have, where things were a bit more dark and rough

Giant octopus destroying buildings...why can't we see more of that today...

From the very beginning we are expose to a whole new world , this sort of magical , mutated creatures are shown to us   as the opening goes we see several different creatures  in a world that resemble ours , we are introduced to the laws that rule this world and in few seconds explained what a "Pokemon trainer" does with out even being introduced to the topic yet.

That in the opening saved  so much exposition time for the first chapter , by the time the opening was finished we had a pretty good idea of what to expect , who was the main character and  what he will be doing. (I don't do this often but I do recognize the people that thought on the opening deserve a standing ovation for  what they did)

On the first 2 seconds and we are already immerse in this new world

The scripting wasn't really the stories strongest point , like  most "Shonen" series at the time they tried to use catch phrases and some funny dialogue now and then to add some comedy form episode to episode which worked well , though there are several inconsistencies  like for example that time when Pikachu defeated an Onix using  a thunderbolt cause apparently the rock gym needs  sprinklers more than the plant gym....though the series as well had some nice and memorable moments.

Both in the game and in the series he ended up being a good rival

The art for the time was really nice , compared to many other series it did stand out , it was bright and exotic , having several different scenarios that went from cities to forest to haunted house and more , every one nicely done and the music as well is another  thing that  makes Pokemon stand out.(I can bet many of you sang that first bit of the opening~)

I always thought Dragonair was such a cute pokemon..

Well Pokemon is the second best selling video game franchise of the world and for good reasons  , specifically the Anime ( at least the first 2 seasons most people saw) were incredible well made , not to mention the nostalgia factor was well applied when the younger kids that turned into adults and remembered how much joy they had while watching the cartoon , playing with their friends  with the card game and battling on their gameboys ; wanted the same for their own children and so new generations were influenced by Pokemon.
Bringing people together and make them happy ,
the intentions of the creators  is still seen today

An Anime  I can say without doubt that is deserving of it's title of Classic ,in all aspects I can say the first season  of Pokemon  along with the second one are  exceptionally well done ; not only having innovation ,  a massive world to let the viewer immerse and enjoy  , but also a legacy that parents and children a like got to enjoy.

So that was my critique for this week I hope you have enjoyed it and I leave you all my fellow readers with my Table of Judgement and something else I found rather funny~

Ah internet you always know how to make one laugh~

I wonder..what happened to that  bug trainer samurai guy...

  1. Pokemon never gets old! I love it! I really need a Pokeball as a purse. That way I can carry my house around with me 24/7! How ecofriendly would that be? Haha.
