The Way of the Critique

"Everyone's is a critic"  , "You shouldn't criticize it if you can't make it better" , "Don't criticize what you can't understand" , "People who criticize others often reveal what themselves lacks"

All of them phrases I heard quite often (specially if I give my opinion about anime...or...anything really...) , but even if most people see criticism as something negative ; the truth is that  a constructive critique can be very helpful.

No..not like this..

Most believe that  a critique is pointing out every little flaw that one can find , truth is pointing flaws is the last thing we have to focus on. The very first thing we need to do is being as objective as possible , "but Kyou critiques are supposed to be based on our opinion and opinions are supposed to be subjective...so isn't that contradictory?

I'm glad you brought that up ,and yes most of the time opinions are subjective though that doesn't mean  they can be objective. Getting rid of all our biased and emotional opinions before we start to criticize  is essential , it will not only help us make a  better judgement of the different points we are evaluating  but also it will let us see them from different points of view.

As I mentioned above the second thing we need is a set of different aspect to evaluate , before we start to criticize we need to know what aspect we will be evaluating , have a reference  to compare  with and finally a table or chart where we can  put in a quantifiable way  how we have evaluated those aspect.

Not...what I had in mind..but..works?

Think of it as how they evaluate precious metals and gems , usually with a sample that has a high grade of purity and different  high quality properties and the new samples are compared to that one and depending on the results a different grade is given.

By now I bet some of you are wondering "Why should we criticize?    everyone has their own opinion and point of view"  and that's very true , but lets think it this way...lets assume we just acquire a new internet connection and our ISP (Internet Service Provider) offered us a high speed broadband , the service in the beginning is amazing there is nothing to complain about , we have a good speed , no lag whatsoever and  we even can play an online game while loading 3 YouTube videos  while downloading some music.  Then  some time passed and the service gets a bit less good..the speed is not that good , but hey  we still can play games decently enough m watch YouTube and download stuff it's probably just more people using the service so it got a bit slower right? Some more time later  the service is so bad that we can't any longer  load Google if our lives depended on it , at that point if anyone asked us what we think about the service..we would pretty much burst in rage just thinking about it.

Yeah pretty how we would look like~

So criticizing is not actually complaining but trying to maintaining a certain grade of quality or help improving the quality of a given product, service or something we consume (yes we can consume anime...)

Not..that..literal....
Lastly we should be flexible and comprehensive , there is more than one way to do the same thing so we  can't say one way of doing it is better than all the others or that only one way is good and the rest aren't , the same way we need to understand that sometimes the results might have been not because   the lack of imagination , creativity or professionalism, but rather the lack of resources and even at some points some aspects had to be sacrificed for others more important. We have to keep all that  in mind before we even start to point out every little flaw we see.

Just try not using a gun to point out those flaws....
