Anime-Game Comparison: Devil May Cry

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another Anime-Game Comparison.
This week, we have one of CAPCOM's  most popular and famous character and franchise

Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry ( デビル メイ クライ)  originally intended to be a sequel for the "Resident Evil" series, but the developing team decided to...deviate...a little from the original more serious theme of the RE games and...we got the action packed, flashy demon killer with some lack of actual logic (but who needs logic when you have a cool sword and a set of twin handguns combined with demon super powers)

The original game was released in 2001 for the Playstation 2 platform which counts with 3 more games on the main series and 1 reboot game that is set on an alternative universe.

The game follows Dante, in his mission to avenge his mother's death  by killing  as many demons as he can (ironically being half demon himself). Maybe not the best plot ever, but the plot is almost irrelevant as the main focus of the game is a heavy combat oriented game with tons of combos to pull off with a wide range of weapons.

I will mainly focus on the events of the third game as it is chronologically the first game, while not the closest to the events or time depicted in the Anime series, it is by far the most polished game for the PS2 platform and has a bigger focus of Dante as a character.

So the main points I will be comparing the Anime to the Game are:
  • Graphics
  • Gameplay
  • Originality
So now is finally time to take a look at one of my personal favorite games and see how well does it take the test of time.

Badassery in the making~

We start off by looking at the main character, Dante, while he just gets ready for a regular day at work.

Plot for all tastes I suppose?

Things are relatively normal at Dante's place, just a day like any other as he sits on his chair and plans to chill out for the rest of the day.

Until Mr. Creepy over here shows up and says he has an invitation from Dante's brother Virgil
-Insert joke about his eyes here-

Mandatory back flip ✔

And things start to get a lot more interesting and of course a lot less logical(gladly I'm not making a critique about this) so once the logic, physics and reason have been thrown out the windows,  is time, as Dante himself states, "To get this Party Started!"

Having 5 scythes on your body, pfft it's just a scratch

But a party is not a party without some nice beats~

Tho if things don't go as smoothly, just do it like in the 50's

A gently punch and it should be working~

Look, the face of a satisfied costumer~

Funny enough..it looks cleaner than before

I can't really make justice to the game intro, but without a doubt is full of  flashing moves and shows just how much of a badass Dante really is.

Graphics

On a graphic level the game does well  did use the potential of the PS2 at the time, though sometimes the game has a bit of problem with the shadows that does add to the atmosphere in the game, but sometimes it's just annoying trying to find the enemies in all that darkness.

In comparison the Anime does a pretty good job to give the atmosphere of the first one, while having those nice effects that can only be achieved in an Anime.

I still can't say which one is the bloodier though....

Gameplay

Gameplay wise..this game is just all about being flashy and making as many combos with different weapons as possible, while avoiding enemy attacks (that in greater difficulties result in a possibly instant kill), giving the game a  fast phased action style combat.

You will use a series of light/hard attacks, jumps, taunts and more. Also the game offers a targeting system that will help you know which enemy you are attacking, also there is a menu where you can customize the type of combat style Dante will be using while in battle and different upgrades for your weapons and moves.

-Combat style customization menu-

-Weapons  upgrades-
While in paper it sounds like your typical button smash game, DMC is far more complex than that, the combos while not really hard to pull needs a good timing, and as  the difficulty increases, knowing how to dodge and counter attacks becomes so crucial that as you master the game you do feel like an unstoppable demon killing machine.

How does the Anime compare to this you ask? Well, sadly in the Anime the combat scenes are less flashier and a lot less frequent. Dante also is a bit  more mature (just a bit...), but it surely doesn't fail to deliver!

The fight scenes are less common, that's true, but the feel that the fight have are by no mean less attractive than the ones of the game.

Talk about classy~

Originality

The story is something that really was added for dramatic purposes, but the game recons that is not about having the best narrative or dialogue, but focusing on the gameplay all the way.

I do have  to  admit, that the general story surrounding Dante is not that original, the way it's presented and used gives the player a nice feeling.
As for the Anime, it just follows more of Dante well...being Dante and personally I have nothing against it.

While it might not win an award for its story any time soon, it is still an interesting enough story to let us want to know more about Dante and his struggles.
Even if he on the surface might look like a prankster and a really easy going person.
On the inside he is yet another tortured soul.

Even the Devil can Cry
That concludes this week's comparison, I hope it has been an entertaining read. Like always if you would like to suggest me a game or just share your thought, do so in our comment section down below.
This is Kyou wishing you all a nice day and be sure to check DMS for more Doujins and Games.
