Tools for Making Manga

As you might have seen from our pictures in Google+ or Fb we are proud believers of making Manga the traditional way, though we still do  use software to do some effects and details, most of the work we do it just like the real pros do (mainly because getting drawing tablets is quite expensive around here)

A Mangaka's best friends~

There are several tools that are used in the process of making a Manga, some of these include:

  • Pencils/Mechanical Pencil
We recommend pencils or mechanical pencils that are soft enough to be easily erased,
but still visible for inking. Victor recomends a 2H or and F also a Mechanical Pencil with a 0.7 lead
  • Erasers

Using an eraser that can erase the pencil lines without damaging or leaving your work messy it's essential
-click the image for a complete explanation of each type of eraser-

  • Fine point pens
These are useful in the inking process, mostly to handle small details
  • Nib Pens
If you really want to feel like a true Mangaka, Nib pens are the way to go.
There are a wide variety of Nib Pens, but the one you might know the best is the famous G Nib Pen
  • Ink
You will need lots and I mean lots! of this thing. We use this brand of ink since is waterproof and generally does a good job in the inking process, we only warn not to use "Chinese Ink" since that one has organic components that rotten easily.
  • Rulers
There is a wide variety of rulers and each have an specific purpose, this one is a bendable ruler and it's used mostly for making curve lines in a specific way.(I love playing with this thing~)
There are several more tools you could use if you want to add specific details or add specific effects to your work, but I will be doing  a series of post that would explain more in detail the usage of this and several other tools in the process of making Manga.

If you have any question or you would like to know what tools do we use or where to get them, leave your question, suggestions and thoughts in our comment section. We will be happy to give as much information as we can or just share with you the experience we had with different brands and tools.

This is Kyou whishing you all a nice day and be sure to check DMS for more Doujins and Manga Tools.
