Before anyone can create a masterpiece is necessary to have an idea of what we will be making.
Nobody draws, paints or creates something without having a clear idea of what they want it too look like(unless you are some sort of abstract artist..).
To convert that vision or strike of inspiration, into a true masterful piece we need to do this:

Sketching
While not the most attractive, rather simple and maybe looks something done in a rush.
Sketching is one of the most fundamentals parts of any drawing. Not only will it provide you with the guide lines, but also will provide you with an example of how your idea looks once it's captured on paper.

Giving you space and chance to add corrections, changes or completely do the whole concept from square one. The necessity of sketching is almost intuitive for any artist.
Unless you are some kind of genius I bet things didn't go as well as you would have expected when you tried to draw that masterpiece you envisioned in your mind for the first time.

It does take time before one can easily do a humanoid figure (or a mecha in this case) without needing to do several corrections before being satisfied, but the more you sketch the more you will learn and the more your technique will improve.

One of the things Victor recommends the most is to save your previous works, despise the fact that they might look bad, they might not be the best of your work and might be something that make you feel embarrassed, though as you continue practicing you will look at your previous work and be able to notice how much your skill has improved.
