Anime/Manga Vs. Cartoon/Comic

One of the greatest debates in our community, one that have destroyed friendships , relations and even families...

"Anime is not Cartoon" , "Manga and comics are different" , "Mom it's called Anime and it's not from China it's form Japan!! "

A few example of the usual phrases we hear when  someone (usually a mother) calls Anime/Manga  cartoon or comic (or in some cases "those Chinese drawings")

Luffy best spider man?

I at some point believed too that Anime and Cartoons where something completely different and even felt offended when someone would call them that

wonder..where is blue looking at tho...

I have seen countless post and debates  trying to pin point out the difference from each  , "art style" , "story" and "place of origin"  are among the most important facts that tend to tell whether is  anime or a comic and often mixing either of them will result in some serious hate from the fanbase.
I like both D:

And for many years I believed those facts to be a way to tell if it was an Anime or  a Cartoon , but then I discovered that Japan wasn't the only one making "Anime" and so I was confused..what is  Anime? , is it really different from comic and both should not be  treated as the same thing?

Gotta Admit the Anime version is more detailed ~

Then what happens to Anime that doesn't usually follows the art styles , story patterns and other things we use to define them as "Anime" or is it  some sort of birth right  that this series have because they where made in Japan?  Then what happens to other works that aren't from Japan but aren't from the Western side of the world ?  How do we call those does series?

"Kyou that's so simple everything done in Japan , Korea , China , etc  it's Anime and everything done in the Western is Comic and Cartoon duh"

I been dying to use this image

I don't expect to create controversy or just try to  impose my view on everyone , rather I would like to give a few information that might be of great help and make us think a second time before we label something as one thing or the other.

So be sure to check my next series of post where I will be tackling the history of both Anime and Cartoon and even show you why "Cartoons" aren't actually what we thought.

  1. I love the Anime vs. Cartoon fan art that people do. It just fascinates me! Honestly, I find both of them to be entertaining. One thing I particularly like about cartoons is the speed that they are released. It's much quicker because of the lack of details that most cartoons have in their drawings. As for anime, it is a bit slower for each episode, but it's SO worth it. As an inspiring art (hobbyist), I can't help but gape at the different art styles and abilities and how it is brought to life. Either way, they're both great and fun to watch! :D

    1. Most of the times what actually helps Western Animated series be release faster is that they are worked months before their air date and that the effects take less time to make (compared to Anime that is o: ) I'm also someone that enjoy both Western and Eastern Animated series owo~
