Anime/Manga Vs. Cartoon/Comic Conclusion

Well as the final post on this sections expect a bit of a long post, but don't worry I will try to make it as entertaining as I can.

So before we start I would like to summarize what we have learn so far:

  1. We have seen how Comic and Manga industry developed  as we know it today thanks to an individual  who turned childish entertainment into something that could appeal to a wider audience.
  2. War was a decisive factor in how both animated industries Anime and Cartoon began.
  3. Anime/Manga and Cartoon/Comic began as entertainment for kids, but quickly grew and spread into a wider variety of genres.

Now that I have refreshed your memory and for those that haven't read any of the previous post don't worry I will  avoid the use of technical language or  reference content in the previous post.

To begin I would like to  quickly compare each Western and Eastern style and mention why some people thing they are not similar  and should be  address as different things.

Comic Vs Manga (P.S. Deadpool is Awesome~)
So lets begin with the most common stereotypical assumptions of what this two forms of entertainment are.

Comic:

  • Dudes in tights.
  • Next summer blockbuster movie.
  • Stuff for Nerds.
  • What the guys of "The Big Bang Theory" say they like.
  • Bad for your brain.

 Manga:

  • Chinese drawings.
  • Girls with big boobs.
  • Pornographic material.
  • Over Powered heroes without tights.
  • Weeaboo stuff.

Well now a days those notions are not as common as they used to be, instead let's see what they really are.

Comic:

  • A form of narrative that uses pictures to tell a story.
  • Spread in a wide variety of genres and sub-genres that include  childish as well as more mature stories.
  • Usually display both a realistic style of art as well as a cartoon-like style.
  • It's read worldwide including Japan.
  • Several Asian artist work in the Comic industry.

 Manga:

  • A form of narrative that uses pictures to tell a story.
  • Originally based on western style which later evolved into several notorious styles.
  • Content varies from childish stories , into serious more complex stories and do have adult material (plenty of adult material..)
  • Originally produced mainly on Japan, but now several other countries like Korea and China work professionally in it and several other countries produce them as fan-made material.

I will skip the  Anime and Cartoon part since it's pretty much the same thing, instead lets have a little look at some of the arguments most people use  when trying to defend the idea that Anime/Manga and Cartoon/Comics are not the same thing.

Visual Characteristics

The very first thing that comes to mind when trying to separate both  is that while in Anime the face expressions, physical motion  are more closer to resemble those in real life that cartoons are; two great examples of how wrong this assumption is come to mind.

Definition and Term

While is true that the dictionary define them as a "Japanese Style" form of animation,  how should we classify those who aren't from the Western but aren't Japanese either?
Let me present to you some examples of Korean "Anime"

Track City
Maybe not as well known as some other works, but for those who had Fox Kid at a certain point around the early 2000s (specially in Latin America) you might be familiar with this story about a kid fighting for the future of a world with  this little remote controlled cars.

And if you still don't believe me well let me present to you:

Girls of the Wild's
A popular Korean web comic based on fights and romance, funny enough both this web-comic and the previous show are classified by fans as both Anime and Manga, but since they aren't from Japan should they be called and labeled as such?

Topics/Themes

Now this one I find it so hilarious thanks to the irony, the people that uses this argument based it on Anime being focused more on slice of life topics, violence or sexual themes while cartoons focus manly on making the audience laugh and tend to do more parodies of the pop culture.

And yet again I have two huge examples of why this notions is mistaken.

Gin Tama

Family Guy
Don't let neither of them fool you! Gin Tama while looking all serious on the outside is well known for being the biggest most large parody based anime (which do contains a slightly bit of story somewhere) and Family Guy....well anyone that has been able to see this or any of the similar shows would instantly known how much violence sexual themes and other things this show has.

Lastly we have to consider those shows that were aired both in the USA and in Japan, shows such as:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsuno
Monsuno
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers
Transformers

Monsuno was firstly aired in the USA and then in Japan with she intention to sell the toys of the same name, while transformers is a Japanese franchise licensed by Hasbro and excuse me for digressing a little here but I believe this little video will erase any doubts you may have concerning transformers being Japanese.

You can't get more Japanese than that...well maybe if you ad some japanium here or there...in any case so far we have seen several examples that both Anime/Manga and Cartoon/Comics aren't really different, but I have one last example that might change those stubborn exception minds.

A show that not only has plenty of Comics, several season both aired in the USA and Japan(and several other countries) and counts with its own official Manga. That show is:

No, it has nothing to do with me liking the show.

This little show based on candy colored equines was dub into Japanese audio (you don't hear that to often huh?) counts with several comics and it's Manga is in progress.

100% Japanse

As if this grass chewers weren't cute enough...and if you are still not amused maybe hearing this might change your mind?

In the end Anime, Manga, Cartoon and Comics are just forms of entertainment. They were created to bring happiness , to tell a story or simply to serve as a distraction for children, now though as they grow and explore different topics we see them try evoke different emotions is their audience.
Whatever you think of them the real important thing is that they serve as entertainment and with that I conclude this section.

For all of you that have read all this I want to thank you and welcome any who wish to leave an opinion or any thought to do so in the comment section. Doesn't matter if you agree or not with me I would love to hear from you guys and maybe you would like to propose any other topic for me to research and look more in dept.
