Black Cat Critique

Black Cat( ブラックキャット Burakku Kyatto) is a Japanese Manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Yabuki originally serialized by Weakly Shonen Jump from July 200 to June 2004 with an Anime adaptation produced by Gonzo that aired in the Tokyo Broadcasting System from October 2005 to March 2006.

Black Cat

The plot of the series focuses on the ex-member of an assassins group known as the Chrono Numbers, controlled by the political organization called Chronos.
Once, one of the best assassins for Chronos; Train Heartnet  became a sweeper ( a licensed bounty hunter) who travel with his new companions in search for targets and money to keep himself from starvation.

So it has been forever since I did one of this (or any post really ^^"), but finally here you go the second series in the section of "Stereotypical "Shonen" Battle-Manga Kyou DOES Like"
Like always I want to remind every single one of our readers that this is only my opinion and it's completely fine if anyone disagree.

Plot

Black Cat's plot is  as simple as most "Shonen Battle-Manga" type of series, we have a protagonist that lived through many hardships during his life and for...reasons...he abandoned his life as an assassin to search for a better way to live and finally be happy once again.

The plot is simply and several other Shonen have used similar ones for years, but BlackCat's approach on it was rather more interesting than the average Battle-Manga.

Containing a good amount of action, comedy and plot...both types of plot...it manages to keep anyone entertain with amazing characters and story since the very beginning

Dedicated to our fellow readers that wanted more...plot..

Development

Unlike Chrome Sealed Regios, BlackCat doesn't present the characters straight away but rather used a more complex way of mixing flashbacks and other elements to presents characters, their personalities and story. Although it takes some time to understand who are the main characters and what the story will be about, what BlackCat does better than most Battle-Manga themed Anime is the great development on it's characters.

Every characters main or secondary, has some interesting and complex personality and we get to see enough of each to understand their motivations and goals. Not to mention the transformation of the protagonist from a cold minded swift killing machine

Epic Catchphrase...is epic
To a  relaxed easy going idiot....

Yeah hard to think is the same guy..
Unlike other protagonist, Train not only fill his role as "the hero" but also goes beyond that and blends with a fantastic world filled with highly skilled criminals and super humans, and those who hunt them.

Background Story

This is one of the things in witch sadly the series doesn't stand out like in others, while the characters past is being explained on a pretty well established phase as the audience can feel the character growth. When it comes to the background story of the world itself....there is not really much to say, few things are explained during the Anime and all of it is only relevant to the current matter at hand, like for example the Taoist war that happened 20 years ago as said several times during the series, but other than that the world itself is a mystery.

Several Cities or towns are featured, and while all of them are better than a nameless city that the characters are there just for plot reasons, though the really important details can only be inferred by the audience; like for example the fact that the series takes place in a world were some people are born with superhuman like abilities, making the whole world adapt to it and that's why like there exist criminals with super powers, there also exist those who fight against them (kind like any marvel or DC comic really...).

Yet nothing else is explained, though I do understand that the focus is rather on the characters than in the plot itself, but it would have been  really nice if the world have been as complex as the characters.

Script

While not really bad written, the dialogues of  each character are nice fluid and goes well with their personality, yet almost none of them are memorable..even tho the jokes are also nice and the serious parts are very interesting, we got things like...

The random attack name(cause if you don't yell the name of your attack before using it you are doing it wrong..) and Train being silly, but that does fit the series and usually will blend with the rest of the things going around in each chapter.

Though some characters have more memorable lines than others, specially Sven and Eve.

Eve ♥.♥.....Ok enough fangirling moments...

Pretty much everything Sven does is funny and memorable

Art

Art wise, BlackCat does an amazing job. The animation is pretty good, the fighting scenes are really nice animated and the colors are bright yet fitting even the more series dark scenes.

A pretty nice perspective  directly from Tain's eyes~

The fights are exceptionally well made as they are the focus of any Battle-Manga, this will obviously be especially detailed. But in the series fight are not only flashy and..well extremely exaggerated like in any other series, instead they both a nice selected soundtrack with animation that make every fighting scenes look like true art.

Gun Vs. Sword..you are doing it right

By now you might been wondering why do I like this series so much if other like Fairy Tail or Bleach have similar qualities like good characters and flashy fights? Also I would like to take a note and say that despise I really do like Eve a lot (like I been saying the whole critique..), I also like other characters like Sven and Janos..even the oversize and weird pup Anubis is a really cool characters.

Yet what I really like about the series it's the fact that the world is so well constructed, and superpowers are something that their inhabitants have to deal with on a daily basis..not like just a selected few that are rare to see, but rather a world that adapts to what happens.

Also the comedy that is not too dumb nor relies on perverts to be entertaining and enjoyable, that fits completely with a series that is full of actions. For example the series have plenty of  serious like jokes.

Nun smacking time!!!
And it also has more simplistic jokes to reach both a more mature audience and  a younger audience.

The Horror!!

BlackCat is a series made to be enjoyed by everyone, it has a bit of everything and it doesn't have a really complex plot, but it doesn't focus only on fights and..the other kind of plot...to fill up time between the major events. Characters are interesting, they develop at a good phase and even secondary characters get some nice time on screen.

Well that concludes today's critique and I hope it has been worth the wait. Like always we welcome everyone to leave your opinions, suggestions and thought on our comment section down below (just be sure to remember this is a family friendly blog and we try to avoid sexual related topics)
